- What Causes Digestive Problems with Milk Products?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I have always had some type of mild digestive problems, never
- anything too severe. However I recently binged on some great cheese I had
- found at the store, and suddenly the symptoms became very severe. My doctor
- has decided that it has something to do with milk, and my inability to digest
- it correctly. It has a long name that I didn't quite get, but wonder if you
- have enough facts from this to provide me with more information? I really
- hope so.

- ANSWER: From the limited history, it is hard to be certain, but a condition
- known as "lactose intolerance" would seem to be the answer. Lactose (or
- "milk-sugar") is found in milk and, of course, milk products such as cheese,
- ice cream and other dairy products. In order for the body to use this sugar,
- it must be digested, or broken down to a simpler form. Normally the body
- produces an enzyme called "lactase" to perform this function. Lactase is
- produced in cells that line the intestine, but when they fail to produce
- sufficient amounts of this important enzyme, you may suffer from a variety of
- abdominal symptoms that include cramping, bloating, nausea, gas and diarrhea.
- You are not alone, for about 30 million adult Americans may suffer from
- mild cases of lactose intolerance. The symptoms only are provoked when they
- try to consume too many dairy products at once. It is most commonly diagnosed
- in women between the ages of 20 to 40 years old, and is more frequent in
- people of Asian, African, Native American, Mediterranean and Mexican-American
- descent.
- In many cases the symptoms can either be avoided or lessened by paying a
- bit more attention to the diet, once you are aware of the situation and its
- cause. Reduce the amount of dairy products, including that wonderful cheese
- you bought, and be cautious about all products that contain nonfat dried milk,
- milk solids or butter. You had best check the labels on any of the products
- you currently purchase in your food store. Your doctor may also consider
- prescribing certain medications which contain the needed lactase enzyme, if
- you have a moderate or severe case.
